Unwanted hair is a nuisance and can often be a source of embarrassment. However, there are several ways of temporarily or permanently removing unwanted hair.
Unwanted Facial Hair
Dermaplane, waxing and laser treatment are three proven methods of removing unwanted facial hair. Dermaplane is a skin resurfacing procedure that scrapes away the top layer of dead skin cells, as well as any peach fuzz. There is no downtime with the treatment. Waxing is a popular, affordable choice and is especially effective on the upper lip and side of the face; results last two to six weeks. Laser hair removal is a more permanent solution, achieving a 50% – 70% overall reduction in three treatments.
"Genetics, certain medical conditions and some medicines can cause prominent facial hair growth," said Christopher A. Moeller, M.D. "A licensed esthetician at the Skin Enhancement Center can help determine the best method of removing unwanted facial hair."
LASER — A laser is the most effective method of reducing or eliminating hair growth. It offers the best results for light-skinned, dark-haired individuals. A laser beam destroys the hair at its base. Because hair grows in several stages, multiple sessions are required in order to achieve the desired effect. Maintenance treatments may also be required at yearly or longer intervals, depending on the individual.
WAXING — Waxing removes the hair from the root, producing results that last two to eight weeks. It is one of the most affordable procedures and can performed on almost any area of the body. Areas that are repeatedly waxed over time can exhibit softer and lighter regrowth, and the amount of new hair can be permanently reduced.
"Waxing has been a popular hair-removal method for centuries," said Moeller. "Waxing is effective at temporarily removing hair, however for a more permanent option laser treatments have been proven to reduce the amount of hair growth over several treatments."
INGROWN HAIRS — An ingrown hair occurs when the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin, sometimes accompanied by an infection. It most often appears in shaved areas of the skin. Minimize the occurrence by shaving in a different direction and not quite as closely. Exfoliating the area and using products with salicylic acid can also help treat and prevent ingrown hairs.
