While the smooth, even tone of perfect skin may seem an illusion for most of us, the freckles, age spots and dark under-eye circles that often appear on our faces and bodies do not have to be permanent.
Freckles
Freckles are clusters of concentrated melanin. They are genetic and appear after sun exposure, acting as a form of sun protection. Lasers are highly effective at removing freckles, but before beginning the process, it is important to have them checked by a dermatologist to ensure that none of the freckles are cancerous or pre-cancerous. Once you are cleared, the freckles are simple to remove because they sit on the top of the skin. Bleaching creams can lighten freckles, although results are not apparent for several months. To help prevent freckles, apply a strong sunscreen and avoid sun exposure.
Age spots
Also called solar lentigines, age spots are gray, brown or black spots that vary in size. They develop over time on skin most often exposed to sunlight, appearing on the face, hands, arms and shoulders. Although harmless, age spots can be lightened with creams or completely removed with lasers. Treatment with the Fraxel® laser is especially effective at removing age spots, is approved for all skin types and locations on the body and has a quick healing time.
“Fraxel is the latest and best laser to treat aging and scarring on the skin,” said Christopher A. Moeller, M.D.
The best defense against developing age spots is to protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun. Avoid spending time in the sun as much as possible; when outdoors, use sunscreen consistently and wear protective clothing.
Dark under-eye circles
A cosmetic nuisance, dark circles under the eyes can be caused by a variety of factors, including heredity, nasal congestion, eczema, certain medications and eyelid swelling during sleep — but probably not fatigue. The skin under the eye is very thin and, as blood passes through the surrounding veins, the skin appears to take on a bluish tint. The thinner the skin, the darker the appearance of the circles. Home remedies, such as cool tea bags or cucumber slices, are temporary and only partially effective. Over-the-counter products and makeup may be enough to diminish their appearance. For more severe cases, laser therapy often helps, and a new technique involving the injection of hyaluronic acid (Juvederm™, etc.) can greatly improve the skin’s appearance.
Smoother skin
“Acne and other scarring can now be effectively treated with minor downtime using Fraxel,” said Dr. Moeller. The Fraxel laser is FDA-approved for all skin types and locations.
