Melasma is a skin condition presenting as irregularly shaped blotches of light to dark brown pigmentation usually occurring on the upper lip, nose, cheeks, chin and forehead. Melasma mostly occurs in women (about 90% of those affected of childbearing age) and can be frustrating and difficult to treat. It often appears in young women using oral contraceptives and is also common among pregnant women so much so that it’s often called “the mask of pregnancy.”

Although the precise cause of melasma is unknown, estrogen and UV light seem to be the biggest culprits. Sun exposure is necessary for the development of this condition and is well known to make melasma worse. There is no cure for melasma, but improvement is possible. The first order of defense is strict sun avoidance and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, worn daily, whether it’s sunny out or not. Don’t forget that UV rays penetrate glass; that means car windows, home and office.

SkinCeuticals and IS Clinical sunscreens are broad-spectrum protection formulated for transparency on the skin. Treatment may involve bleaching creams containing hydroquinone, the most commonly used depigmenting agent, and chemical peels or laser, such as our Sciton BBL™ broadband light treatment. Salicylic acid – like that in our favorite chemical peel, the BetaLift® – gently exfoliates the surface cells and stimulates the process of skin renewal, lightening melasma. Products containing glycolic acids, kojic acid and salicylic acid are also helpful for at-home treatment to further hasten the resolution of melasma (i.e. IS Clinical Active Serum)!

Management of melasma requires patience and commitment, avoidance of sun, daily use of sunscreen and often chemical peels, laser and depigmenting agents can lead to a successful outcome.
