SKIN CANCER
Skin cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer with over one million Americans developing it every year. Fair-skinned people are at the highest risk of developing skin cancer. The best defense for developing skin cancer is sun avoidance and habitual sunscreen use. There are four types of skin cancer:
- Actinic Keratoses: Actinic or Solar Keratoses are considered the earliest stage of skin cancer. They’re usually red scaly spots usually found on the face, ears, arms, hands and other chronically sun exposed areas.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma: This is the most common type of skin cancer. These small, fleshy bumps, nodules or red patches appear mostly on the head, neck and hands. This cancer doesn’t grow quickly, and rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but can be locally destructive.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma: This type of cancer is usually located on the rim of the ear, the face, hands, arms, lips and mouth. It appears as a bump or as a red, scaly patch and spreads. Early treatment is important and can save lives.
- Malignant Melanoma: This deadly cancer takes around 8,000 American lives every year. It begins in the skin cells that produce melanin, the dark protective pigment that makes the skin tan. It shows up in mixed shades of tan, brown and black, as well as red or white. Melanoma may arise from a mole or another dark spot in the skin and has the ability to spread. Early detection and removal is key to surviving melanoma.
